Acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has called for a prompt and in-depth investigation to clarify the case of death of 27-year-old Agon Zejnullahu in the municipality of Lipjan on July 7.
Regarding the case in which five police officers are suspected of involvement, Kurti said that launching an anti-campaign against the police is harmful.
According to him, there will be no shelter within or from institutions for those who have exceeded their authority or violated the law in the line of duty.
“The news of his death has shocked us all. Much of what happened on the night of July 7 is now public, also thanks to witness recordings, but to understand everything that occurred, a professional investigation is needed. Cooperation between the Kosovo Police, the Police Inspectorate, the Institute of Forensic Medicine, and the Prosecutor’s Office is essential. Five police officers are currently in detention. I call for a deep and swift investigation that will fully uncover the truth and reveal all circumstances, so that justice is served and accountability is ensured,” said Kurti.
Kurti also commented on the public judgments surrounding the case.
He said that any tendency to launch an anti-campaign against the Kosovo Police is damaging and not a solution.
“I want to make it clear that there will be no shelter in institutions or from institutions for anyone who may have exceeded their authority or broken the law in the course of official duty. Public discussions and judgments are especially difficult for the Zejnullahu family and the friends of the deceased. At the same time, the trend of starting an anti-campaign against the Kosovo Police is harmful and not a solution,” Kurti added.
On behalf of the government cabinet, Kurti also expressed condolences to the Lima family, after Kaçun Lima, commander of the firefighting unit in Gjakova, lost his life yesterday while on duty, en route to provide assistance.
Kurti stated that, “Lima will always be remembered for his selflessness in daily work and high dedication to his official duties.”
