Kosovo’s Special Prosecution on Tuesday filed an indictment against a former member of Serbia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), suspected of involvement in the killing, torture, and looting of Albanian civilians during the 1998-99 war in Kosovo.
The Special Prosecution identified the defendant only by the initials R.D., who was arrested in September last year and has remained in detention since then.
He is accused of killing a person identified by the initials SH.D. on May 22, 1999, in Vushtrri.
“According to the indictment, R.D., a former member of the Serbian MUP, fired a weapon at the victim SH.D. on May 22, 1999, who did not survive the injuries sustained,” the statement said, KosovaPress reports.
The defendant is also accused of participating, together with other members of Serbian forces, in the killing of 71 civilians, as well as in inhumane treatment, torture, looting, and the expulsion of the Albanian civilian population.
The case has been referred to the Special Department of the Basic Court in Prishtina for further review, while the defendant remains in detention.
