Strict controls on overloaded vehicles, over €13,000 in fines issued in a single day
Kosovo's Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) has announced increased inspections and strict enforcement of the law against economic operators and drivers of heavy vehicles that exceed permitted weight limits, emphasizing that overloading is one of the main causes of damage to road infrastructure, reports KosovaPress.
According to the ministry, hundreds of millions of euros are invested annually from the state budget in the construction and maintenance of roads; therefore, these investments must be protected from damage caused by failure to comply with regulations.
MIT estimates that during the summer season, high temperatures further increase the risk of asphalt damage, requiring greater caution and compliance with weight restrictions by all operators and heavy vehicle drivers.
The ministry announced that, in cooperation with the Kosovo Police, it will carry out continuous field inspections to prevent damage to road infrastructure.
“According to the published data, on July 1, 2026 alone, 24 violations were issued against vehicles that exceeded the permitted weight, with total fines amounting to €13,910. Of this amount, €13,140 were imposed on economic operators, while €770 were imposed on individuals,” the statement said.
MIT emphasized that there will be no tolerance for violators, calling on economic operators and heavy vehicle drivers to respect the permitted weight limits and contribute to the protection of road infrastructure, which is financed by taxpayers’ money.
