Farmers in Kosovo are currently in the spring planting season, with maize remaining one of the most important crops.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development emphasises that maize cultivation requires careful planning and management in order to increase yield per unit area and maintain production quality. For this reason, financial support through subsidies for farmers producing this crop has also been planned this year.
The institution recommends the implementation of agrotechnical measures, such as proper soil preparation through ploughing and the use of organic fertilisers, chemical fertilisation in spring, and re-fertilisation during the plant’s development stages. Special importance is also given to the selection of seeds and hybrids, which vary depending on regions such as the Kosovo Plain and the Dukagjini Plain.
According to the recommendations, the optimal maize planting period is from 15 to 25 April, when soil temperatures reach 10–12 degrees Celsius, while irrigation is also recommended to achieve higher yields.
