The former U.S. Special Envoy during the war in Kosovo, Christopher Hill, will continue his testimony today in the trial of the former KLA leaders before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

Hill began his testimony yesterday, where he explained how he first became involved with the Kosovo issue. He said that this was at the request of former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

"At first, I became involved [in the Kosovo issue] by the U.S. in May 1998. I received a phone call from Madeleine Albright, who asked me to take on the role of Special Envoy for Kosovo, reporting directly to the Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright. I understood my role as one where we had to offer support and political solutions, and help de-escalate the growing violence there. From the very beginning, my colleagues and I tried to develop a plan for autonomy so that Kosovo’s autonomy could be restored and it could have its own governance. This was the main path we were pursuing with Kosovo and Serbia," he said initially.

In addition, Hill also explained the meeting between former President Ibrahim Rugova and Slobodan Milošević, stating that the meeting took place at the request of Ambassador Richard Holbrooke.
