The European Parliament has adopted a new law modernizing the rules for coordinating social security systems in the European Union, aimed at making it easier for citizens living or working in another member state to access their rights.

According to the European Parliament, around 16 million Europeans currently live or work in another EU country and are expected to benefit from the new rules.

The adopted legislation introduces clearer rules on unemployment benefits, modernizes provisions related to long-term care and family benefits, and strengthens cooperation between member states in implementing social security systems.

The European Parliament said the changes aim to ensure better social protection for citizens moving within the EU by making the coordination of benefits simpler, more transparent, and more efficient.
