Donika Gërvalla said that she has no expectations regarding the final decision of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague in the case of the four former KLA leaders.

Asked by journalists after a government meeting, she said that the question should be asked why they have been held in detention for so long, but added that it is not her role at this stage to give recommendations, as the court was voted by the Assembly of Kosovo.

“I have no opinion and no expectations from the court. It must complete the process. The accused have been held in detention for a very long time; the question is why so long, but it is not up to me at this stage to give recommendations or instructions to the court voted by the Assembly of Kosovo on what it should do at this stage,” she said.

Meanwhile, on February 9 this year, closing statements began at the Specialist Chambers in the case of Thaci and others.

On February 18, the four former KLA leaders delivered their closing statements of 20 minutes each, once again declaring themselves not guilty of all charges brought by the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office.

The defence teams of Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi have also requested acquittal on all counts.

The Chief Specialist Prosecutor, Kimberly West, has requested prison sentences of up to 45 years for each of the former KLA leaders, on charges of war crimes.

The trial began on April 3, 2023, nearly three years after the indictment was confirmed, and the former leaders have been held in detention in The Hague since then.
