Mural dedicated to Mother Ferdonije: building a remembrance for future generations

The sacrifice of Mother Ferdonije Qerkezi from Gjakova is immense, and today a mural was dedicated to her.

A part of Ulpiana in Prishtina now carries her presence, and on the boulevard “Dëshmorët e Kombit” her figure has been depicted.

This mural was inaugurated on Monday, where it was emphasized that collective memory plays an important role in building a just society.

This was stated by Marigona Shabiu from the organization “Youth Initiative for Human Rights of Kosovo.”

Shabiu added that over the past two decades, the process of clarifying the fate of missing persons has been characterized by delays, lack of transparency, and insufficient political will. According to her, this situation should not be normalized or accepted as unchangeable.

Meanwhile, Kushtrim Gara from the Government Commission for Missing Persons said that through this mural, they are building a memory that should be passed on to future generations.

Mother Ferdonije also thanked everyone who has supported her over the years.

“Thank you for the visits you have made to me, and to the people who continue to support me. Thank you also for the mural you have made for me and for not forgetting my family,” said Qerkezi.

Meanwhile, the author of the mural, Ermira Murati, emphasized that this work was created as an act of tribute to this pain of society.

“This work was painted in honor of April 27, the Day of the Missing Persons, as a memory and an act of tribute to such great pain for our society. Through the figure of Mother Ferdonije, this work is not dedicated only to this very strong woman, but to all families who continue to live with pain and absence,” said Murati.
