Indictment against D.R. for war crimes in Gjakova

The Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo has filed an indictment against the defendant D.R. for the criminal offense of “War Crimes against the Civilian Population”, sanctioned under the Criminal Law of the SFRY, which was in force at the time the crime was committed.

According to the prosecution’s statement, investigations confirmed that during the period of May 7–10, 1999, in the city of Gjakova, the defendant participated in a widespread and organized attack by Serbian military, police, and paramilitary forces against the Albanian civilian population, acting in co-perpetration with other individuals.

“D.R. is accused of killing three Albanian civilians, who were subsequently physically mistreated, of the forced displacement of Albanian civilians from their neighborhoods, looting, and destruction of houses in several neighborhoods of the city of Gjakova.”

The indictment is based on testimonies of victims and eyewitnesses, identification of the defendant through photographs, reports from the Institute of Forensic Medicine, as well as other material evidence collected during the investigation. The defendant is currently in pre-trial detention, while the Special Prosecution has requested an extension of the detention due to the risk of flight.

The Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo reiterated its commitment and dedication to uncovering all crimes committed during the war in Kosovo, to bringing justice to the victims and their families, and to contributing to the building of a just and democratic society.
