May 31 and June 7 are the possible dates for holding early elections following the failure to elect a president. According to election process monitors, the Central Election Commission (CEC) has just over one month to prepare and administer the new elections.

The Assembly had until midnight on April 28 to elect a president, after President Vjosa Osmani’s mandate ended at the beginning of April. Prime Minister and Vetëvendosje Movement leader Albin Kurti and opposition parties failed to reach an agreement on electing the head of state.

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu met on Wednesday with CEC Chair Kreshnik Radoniqi to discuss the optimal date for the new elections. Meanwhile, according to information obtained by KosovaPress, Haxhiu has not yet invited political parties for consultations on the election date.

Researcher at the Kosovo Law Institute (IKD), Naim Jakaj, told KosovaPress that elections must be held within 45 days from the dissolution of the Assembly.

According to him, Haxhiu is obliged to hold meetings with all political parties before determining the election date.

“According to the Constitution of Kosovo, elections must be held within 45 days from the moment they are announced, and those elections should have been announced today. The optimal dates are May 31 and June 7. Political parties, which Ms. Haxhiu is expected to invite, should first decide between these dates, after which Ms. Haxhiu should assess which date is most suitable in terms of planning and coordination with the Central Election Commission. Political parties could request elections within 20 days, because in highly extraordinary circumstances elections may also be held within 20 days. However, the opinion of the Central Election Commission must also be considered regarding which dates they can realistically prepare for logistically in order to administer such an important electoral process,” he said.

Political analyst Adrian Zeqiri also called for greater preparation by the CEC for administering the new electoral process.

“The room for maneuver regarding the election date is limited, in the sense that the CEC must prepare thoroughly. There are only 45 days at most, and we are talking about June 7 as the latest possible date,” Zeqiri stressed.

This year’s early parliamentary elections would be the third since 2025. Kosovo also held parliamentary elections in February and December 2025.
