The Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure, through the acting minister Hysen Durmishi, announced that last week a decision was signed for the preliminary protection of the area “Mokna Mountain and Ujman Lake” — one of the most important decisions for the preservation and protection of the natural heritage of the Republic of Kosovo.

According to the announcement, with this decision, Kosovo becomes the country with the highest percentage of territory under nature protection in the entire Western Balkans.

“After a one-year field study, it was determined that this area represents a rare natural asset, with high biodiversity, sensitive ecosystems, and landscapes of special ecological and scientific importance,” the statement said.

Furthermore, it is stated that the area, covering 192.19 km², is now placed under preliminary protection, raising to 12.4% the share of Kosovo’s territory that is legally protected.

“This step represents a major achievement in meeting national and international objectives for nature protection, as well as a firm commitment to preserving natural balances and ensuring the sustainable development of the country,” the ministry’s statement concluded.
