Former President Hashim Thaci began his speech before the panel of judges, KosovaPress reports.

He stated that there is only one truth, and that is that he is completely innocent.

He opened his speech by sending greetings to all Albanians on the anniversary of the declaration of independence.

“For nearly three years in this courtroom, you have heard the prosecution’s accusations. You have also heard the truth. There is only one truth. I am completely innocent.

At the time of the massacres at the beginning of 1998, I was a student in Zurich. I was not making plans to take control of Kosovo; the only person making such plans was Slobodan Milosevic.

Seeing the massacres, I could not remain indifferent. I decided to come to Kosovo. As for what each of you would do, I am proud of my choices and I will never regret them. It is an offense to the memory of the heroes and thousands of victims. It is also an offense to the efforts of NATO, with whom we cooperated closely.”

Thaci said that the only, but indeed the only, adversary was Slobodan Milosevic.

“It is painful to hear this accusation,” he said.

“I was not sure if I would see my family again, let alone exercise any control. I returned to my homeland to risk my life for freedom,” he added.

Control and power were in the iron hands of Slobodan Milosevic.
