The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has mentioned Kosovo and Bosnia, as two points where the potential for tensions still exists.

He made these comments after meeting the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Milojko Spajic, in Brussels.

He said that NATO is ready to carry out its mandate in Kosovo to guarantee stability, just like in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In his speech, Stoltenberg thanked Montenegro for its contribution to curbing Russian aggression, as he added that Montenegro plays an important role in the Western Balkans, a region of strategic importance for NATO.

He said that the outbreak of violence in Kosovo last year is unacceptable, where as a result of tensions, NATO had sent 1000 additional troops.

He has warned that next week, the North Atlantic Council, the highest political body of the alliance, will visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to prove in this way, the unreserved support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Stoltenberg also thanked the Montenegrin prime minister for Montenegro's support to Ukraine in its fight against Russia. He said that Kiev should be helped even further, because according to him, if Putin wins in Ukraine, there is a risk that he will use force again.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Millojko Spajic, pledged that his country will play a constructive role for the peace and stability of the region. He added that with the head of NATO they talked about defense issues, support to Ukraine, adding that now is the time to welcome Sweden as a new member of the alliance.

When asked by journalists about the security situation in the region after the recent events in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Stoltenberg said that the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue is the only way forward to find a stable solution between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Spajic said that the situation in Kosovo has calmed down recently, but that according to him, the Montenegrin state is ready to help maintain peace, since according to him, it is in the interest of Montenegro to maintain peace in Kosovo.
