The third edition of the International Forum on Women, Peace and Security continues in Prishtina. Survivors of sexual violence during the war and their family members have spoken about the wounds of war, calling for this crime to be reported to local authorities.
In the panel titled "Towards Justice: The Strength and Story of Survivors", spoke the survivor of sexual violence and the first man to publicly speak about rape, Ramadan Nishori.
"Before I went to the organization, I had thoughts of harming myself. But through participating in the sessions, I started to find myself again—I felt more supported and freer every day. After a few years, I began taking part in group sessions with other survivors, and each time I gained more strength. But the greatest strength came when I first told my wife. For us survivors, especially at night, it’s very difficult—nighttime brings suffocation, I would leave the house in the middle of the night and cry. When I told my wife, I also lifted that very heavy burden," he said.
He called on all survivors to report the horrors they experienced during the war.Speaking about the trauma endured after the war was also Venesa Sulimani—the daughter of sexual violence survivor Shyrete Sulimani.
"I know what it means to grow up in the shadow of a horror that isn't yours, but that touches every part of your life. A constant reminder that trauma doesn’t end with one generation—it flows, expands, and finds new ways to live within all of us. I watched my mother fight to survive every day—not only what happened to her during the war, but also society’s silence, the stigma, and the lack of justice. From that silence, I grew up asking questions, struggling through sleepless nights, with a deep need to give voice to what was silenced for so long,” she said.
Ukrainian journalist Lydmilla Makvey, who is currently living in Kosovo, said that in Ukraine so far 340 citizens have reported sexual violence.
The International Forum on Women, Peace and Security is organized under the leadership of President Vjosa Osmani.
Yesterday and today, over 30 discussion panels are scheduled to be held, with more than 150 speakers.
