The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has deemed the constitution of the Kosovo Assembly and the formation of the new government, following the February 9 parliamentary elections, as urgent. She called for a solution to be found in line with the Constitution for the establishment of the legislature.

On Tuesday, MPs elected the Speaker of the Assembly as well as four deputy speakers, but the deadlock has now shifted to the election of the deputy speaker from the Serb community.

The Serbian List nominated MP Slavko Simiq for deputy speaker on behalf of the Serb community, but he failed to secure the necessary support in three consecutive rounds.

As a result, the Speaker of the Assembly, Dimal Basha, stated that his candidacy has been exhausted according to the latest ruling of the Constitutional Court, and decided that the election for deputy speaker would be settled by lot, based on the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly.

According to the draw, Serb community MP Nenad Rashiq also failed to receive the required votes to be elected deputy speaker in two attempts, while earlier several MPs from the Serbian List also failed to gain support.

President Osmani said that every day lost in not forming the new institutions is to the detriment of the people, and Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic perspective, while she was more reserved in commenting on the constitutional aspects of the election of the deputy speaker from the non-majority communities.

Kosovo has still not established its new institutions even six months after the February 9 parliamentary elections.

The head of state made these comments after paying tribute at the Monument of the Missing Persons, marking the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. /KosovaPress/
