Muslim believers celebrate Eid al-Fitr today
After the holy month of Ramadan, millions of Muslim believers turn to mosques around the world this morning for the Eid al-Fitr prayer.
Eid does not have a fixed date, it depends on the appearance of the new moon. Eid al-Fitr celebrations also mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Family and friends gather together for prayer and in some cultures, tradition calls for new clothes to be worn and cakes to be baked, while women decorate their hands with henna.
Many believers also use this holiday as a time to give, because the entire month of Ramadan is in itself a time of reflection.
Fasting, its main feature, is one of the 5 pillars of Islam and a very spiritual moment for Muslims around the world to focus on self-purification, tranquility, patience and devotion to religion.
