Leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, has confirmed the concrete offers he made to the chair of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, and the chair of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Bedri Hamza, in order to overcome the political deadlock over the election of the president.

According to him, a “rotation” of positions is needed to overcome the political blockade.

“I offered the PDK leader that there should be a rotation between the current Speaker Albulena Haxhiu and the PDK deputy leader Vlora Citaku. The PDK is free to make Bedri Hamza or Vlora Citaku Speaker of the Assembly, and Albulena Haxhiu would become Deputy Speaker of the Assembly,” he said.

Kurti added that representatives of the Vetëvendosje Movement have received more votes than some opposition leaders, therefore, according to him, the presidency should belong to LVV.

Regarding the LDK, he said he offered them participation in government.

“Did you know that I told the LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku, ‘come in place of Glauk and let’s move forward’? And Glauk has almost four times more votes than Lumir Abdixhiku. The proportions are drastic. Our offer is very generous. But they are not interested in unblocking the situation. They are acting as if it is 2025, when you remember that session when Albulena Haxhiu was not voted. The year 2025 has passed, it is 2026,” he said.

However, he expressed surprise that the opposition rejected these proposals.

“How is it possible that they refused? No, they had previously told us that we cannot govern together because you cannot hold all three positions. Well, if we cannot hold all three positions, we will have only two. Plus, the president, when elected, cannot be a party member. So, if they would take the Speaker of the Assembly, we would not have all three positions. And don’t forget, on February 3, 2020, the Speaker of the Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, gave his seat to Vjosa Osmani. We have done this rotation before,” Kurti stated.

When asked why the presidency position is important to him, Kurti said that other parties do not have enough votes to collect signatures.

“They do not have enough votes to gather signatures for a candidate. 22 MPs are not enough to apply. At some point giving it to him, he did not get it from the people. How can I give it when the people did not give it to him? Democracy means the will of the people, the people at the center, not deals. I am very generous, you should ask them how it is possible that with the numbers they have they are making these refusals,” he said.

Meanwhile, as we are about a week before the deadline set by the Constitutional Court for the election of the president, the positions of PDK and LDK are that they consider their contribution to the process concluded. The final deadline for the election of the president by the Assembly of Kosovo is April 28.
