The German Embassy in Pristina has criticized Serbia, which, according to Berlin, is not taking seriously the demands for the prosecution of those responsible for the attack in Banjska. In this regard, the embassy recalls the German saying: “Erstmal vor der eigenen Haustür kehren” – which symbolically invites the Serbian state to “sweep in front of its own door,” by ensuring justice for the Banjska attack before criticizing Kosovo’s actions.
The embassy’s reaction comes in response to a recent letter from Petar Petković, in which he calls on the European Union, its Member States, and other stakeholders to stop what he describes as “Pristina’s escalatory actions,” specifically the construction of two additional bridges over the Ibar River in Mitrovica.
“The fact that the self confessed leader of that attack, the Kosovo Serb and former Vice Chairman of Srpska Lista Mr. Radoicic, publicly admitted responsibility and yet continues to move freely on Serbian territory deeply undermines efforts to foster trust and accountability in the region. In German we say, “Erstmal vor der eigenen Haustür kehren” - first sweep in front of your own door. Transposed to the current situation, this proverb reminds us that you must bring its own house in order before constantly reproaching Kosovo for its decisions,” states the reaction from the German Embassy.The persons accused of the terrorist attack on September 24, 2023, were seen on June 28 in Pioneer Park in Belgrade, opposite the office of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
Furthermore, the embassy also reacted regarding the project to build two bridges over the Ibar River in Mitrovica, describing this initiative as an “escalatory action.” However, according to the embassy, calls for lowering tensions must be applied equally to all parties.“As we have consistently stated in our replies to earlier press inquiries, we urge the Government of Kosovo to refrain from escalatory moves.However, calls for de-escalation must apply equally to all parties. It is for sure not the Kosovar Government which is failing to enforce legal measures against those responsible for the heinous Banjska attack,” the embassy’s reaction says.
Yesterday, the foundation stone was laid for two new bridges over the Ibar River, worth approximately three million euros. There, the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, did not confirm whether the construction was coordinated with the European Union, saying that they work according to the law and in the interest of the citizens, while emphasizing that the main bridge will also be opened.
