Another major international sporting event has started today in Pristina, specifically at the Palace of Youth and Sports. This is the 19th Mediterranean Championship for young female handball players, the U16 generation.

A total of 12 national teams are participating in the event, with Kosovo placed in Group A alongside Spain, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, and Montenegro.

The opening match, currently underway, is between Kosovo and Spain—a country that continues not to recognize Kosovo as a state but, through sports, has done so on several occasions until now by respecting our national symbols.

However, Spain is not the only non-recognizing country taking part in this championship, as other nations such as Greece, Slovakia, and Romania are also participating.

“Today we started with the first day from 9:00 a.m., since we have many national teams participating. There will be around 36 matches until the end of the championship. As you can see, the first game is against a very strong opponent, Spain. We hope the girls will succeed, even though Spain is known as one of the handball powers,” Kolgeci said.

“We have Spain, Slovakia, Romania, Greece. There are also delegates from some countries, like Tunisia and other North African countries, as far as I know they have not recognized us, but here in Kosovo, in Pristina, everyone must be ready, respect the Kosovo anthem, and in a way, this represents an acknowledgment of our state—and handball helps make that happen,” Kolgeci added.

Meanwhile, Group B consists of Croatia, North Macedonia, Slovakia, Greece, Italy, and Slovenia.

Six group-stage matches will be played by Friday. On Saturday, the final placement matches will take place, with six matches scheduled on that day as well.
