Kosovo Police escorted two individuals to a police station on suspicion of vandalism following an incident on Friday in North Mitrovica involving the “I Love Mitrovica” sign.

According to an official police statement, on June 5, 2026, the decision of the Municipality of North Mitrovica to remove the sign was received. Immediately after receiving the decision, police units arrived at the scene and informed municipal inspectors that the implementation of the decision should be postponed until a response is received from the Ministry of Local Government Administration (MLGA).

The Mayor of North Mitrovica also arrived at the location along with around 20 people, including the Chairperson of the Municipal Assembly. After making a statement to the media, the mayor announced that the painting of the emblem would proceed.

Police stated that officers opposed the action and requested that the damage or painting of the public object be stopped. However, despite police orders, several individuals began painting the emblem, prompting police intervention.

As a result, two individuals were taken to the police station and issued misdemeanor citations for vandalism. By order of the competent prosecutor, they were released under regular procedure, while the case will continue to be handled in accordance with legal procedures.
