Democratic League of Kosovo presents resolution, calls for measures following fuel price increase
The head of the parliamentary group of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Jehona Lushaku-Sadriu, has called on the government to take immediate measures to protect citizens from rising fuel prices. She said the executive must urgently find ways to subsidize fuel prices for agriculture, public transport, and local producers.
In an extraordinary session, she proposed a resolution and called for the support of the members of the Assembly of Kosovo.
Before the start of the parliamentary debate, MP Lushaku-Sadriu said the session was necessary, as she argued that rising fuel prices are at the root of the economic crisis.
During the extraordinary session, Lushaku-Sadriu said that the increase in fuel prices has also led to higher transport costs, increased prices of basic goods, and a decrease in citizens’ purchasing power.
At the beginning of the session, she proposed measures that, according to LDK, are necessary to protect citizens.
“The Assembly requests that the government temporarily reduce the excise tax; the government should immediately apply a reduction of excise from 36 cents per liter to 20 cents per liter, on a temporary basis until prices stabilize in international markets. Secondly, the Assembly requests a temporary reduction of VAT on fuel, since the 18 percent VAT increases alongside prices, meaning citizens pay more tax as prices rise. The government should temporarily reduce VAT on fuel from 18 percent to 8 percent until prices stabilize. Thirdly, the Assembly requests fuel price subsidies for the most sensitive sectors. The government should urgently find ways to subsidize fuel prices for farmers, public transport, and local producers,” she concluded.
The session was called at the request of 41 opposition MPs.
