The Basic Court in Prishtina has ordered one month of pre-trial detention for the defendant S.S., suspected of committing the criminal offense of “War crimes against the civilian population.”

The decision was made following the approval of the request by the Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo. The pre-trial judge, after holding the hearing session, assessed that the legal conditions for setting detention had been met.

According to the court’s ruling, there is a grounded suspicion that on April 6, 1999, in the village of Reznik, Vushtrri municipality, during an operation organized by members of Serbian uniformed forces, the defendant S.S. took part in looting, burning houses, and killing unarmed civilians.

Among the victims of this suspected operation were I.U., M.U. along with their wives, B.U., F.U., S.U., and F.U., as well as T.U. with his wife H.U. Furthermore, according to the Prosecution, a woman identified as B. was forcibly taken, beaten, mistreated, and sexually assaulted by several persons, including the defendant S.S., suffering serious bodily injuries.

The Court reasoned that the gravity and complexity of the offense make detention necessary to ensure the proper conduct of criminal proceedings. It also assessed that the defendant, as a citizen of Serbia, poses a risk of fleeing and evading justice.

Parties dissatisfied with this ruling have the right to appeal to the Court of Appeals through the Basic Court in Prishtina.
