“Çast” mural inaugurated, honoring victims of sexual violence during the war
“Çast” mural has been inaugurated, honoring victims of sexual violence during the last war in Kosovo. The mural was organized by the “Jahjaga” Foundation in cooperation with the Municipality of Prishtina, KosovaPress reports.
The head of the foundation, Atifete Jahjaga, said the mural has special importance as it represents an act of dignity and remembrance.
“In this month, when we mark our collective memory, when we remember the liberation of our country, and honor the sacrifice of every citizen who contributed to the freedom and independence of our country, it is precisely today, Mr. Mayor, that together with many other municipalities we are unveiling this mural, which is not just a mural, but carries a special meaning. It is an act of dignity, an act of remembrance, an act of responsibility toward our truth. Because 27 years ago, we inherited many consequences of the war, including over 20,000 women and men whose bodies were turned into a battlefield, where rape was used as a weapon of war against innocent citizens of our country. This work of art is not just an artwork; it is also a public testimony, a living memory, and a call so that our history is not forgotten and not silenced,” Jahjaga said.
The Mayor of Prishtina, Përparim Rama, said the mural will serve as a collective memory of the war period.
“This mural, placed in the heart of Prishtina, is an act of remembrance and respect for all survivors of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo. It honors every woman and man who survived this horrific war crime. I once again commend President Jahjaga for this initiative, which I am very glad we, as the capital city, have been able to support and give space to this part of our shared history. This mural will remain here forever, so that everyone who passes by will have a social and collective reminder of what we, as a society, have gone through. It shows that the sacrifice of these survivors is the very foundation of the peace, freedom, and democracy we enjoy today as citizens of the capital and of all Kosovo. Congratulations Prishtina, thank you very much President Jahjaga for this wonderful initiative. May it remain here as a reminder of our collective mindset and never be forgotten,” Rama said.
Meanwhile, Igballe Rugova from the Kosovo Women’s Network stated that survivors of sexual violence are still waiting for justice.
“Çast” mural is located near the ABC Cinema in Prishtina.
It is estimated that around 20,000 people in Kosovo are survivors of sexual violence committed by Serbian forces during the last war.
