The President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, said that the Republic of Kosovo is an irreversible reality and a sovereign state.

Speaking at the solemn session of the Kosovo Assembly in honor of the 18th anniversary of Independence, he said that Kosovo was once a place where freedom was killed, but today freedom works and inspires.

“This anniversary is proof that the Republic of Kosovo is an irreversible reality and a sovereign state. Kosovo was once the place where freedom was killed; today it is the place where freedom works, and freedom inspires. Today’s Kosovo is a young state in years, but with deep roots of sacrifice, contribution, and merit. It moves forward with secure steps toward the future, never forgetting the foundations on which it was built,” he said.

He also mentioned the former KLA leaders currently on trial in The Hague. Begaj said they are facing unfair, fabricated charges from the Specialist Court.

“Today our thoughts are with those who are facing a difficult, unfair, and decisive battle in The Hague. The history of Kosovo cannot be understood or written without the names Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi, along with their fellow fighters. Those who led the people toward freedom yesterday are today unfairly facing fabricated charges from the Specialist Court, making all of us feel insulted, prejudged, and accused. The KLA and all those who took up arms to seek freedom for their homeland are, as they always have been and will always be, everywhere, at all times, symbols of freedom. They are part of our state and national memory. The truth cannot be distorted, and history cannot be rewritten or changed. Freedom has a name. Freedom deserves respect and justice. Albania stands with the KLA, the KLA commanders, and the citizens of Kosovo. Albania has stood by Kosovo, and Albania stands alongside Kosovo,” he said.
