Arsim Bajrami has fully returned to academic work, as a few days ago he withdrew his candidacy for President of Kosovo.

He told KosovaPress that he decided not to run at the moment he became convinced that political parties do not want a unifying president who is not under their control.

“At the moment when the main parties gave up on a unity candidate, a candidate with experience, I withdrew my candidacy because it is becoming clear that our political leaders are not interested in electing a credible president, but rather a president they can control and turn into an extension of their daily politics,” he said.

But what was the initial reason for his candidacy?

“My candidacy was a moral act, one of professional dignity. Having participated in all state-building processes, I did not want our state to be harmed. I offered myself, I offered my services only as a consensual candidate,” he stated.

President Vjosa Osmani issued a decree to dissolve the Assembly of Kosovo one day after the Assembly failed to elect a president within the March 5 deadline. The Constitutional Court imposed an interim measure on March 9, valid until March 31, regarding this decree. This decision prevents any actions by President Osmani and the Assembly while the interim measure is in force.

The request for the assessment of the constitutionality of the president’s decree was submitted by Prime Minister Albin Kurti on behalf of the Government.

However, Bajrami, who is also one of the drafters of the Constitution of Kosovo, did not want to comment on what the final decision of the Constitutional Court might be on this issue.

“We are all waiting eagerly,” he said.

At the parliamentary session of March 5, the Vetëvendosje Movement at the last moment also presented the candidacy of Fatmire Mulhaxha Kollçaku as a counter-candidate to Glauk Konjufca for president. In the absence of the opposition, there was no quorum for voting.
