Visa liberalization for Kosovo does not appear on the horizon this year either. The pandemic and the elections in some European countries are expected to make impossible the decision of the Council of the EU, for the free movement of Kosovars in the Schengen area. However, the rapporteur for Kosovo in the European Parliament, Viola Von-Cramon, urges the next government to work and engage in dialogue with skeptical countries to convince them that Kosovo deserves visa liberalization.
The European mechanisms themselves have confirmed that Kosovo has met the criteria for liberalization, but for this to happen, each of the EU member states in the European Council must confirm visa liberalization for Kosovo. Portugal has taken over the leadership of the Council since January. Meanwhile, Kosovo is the only country in the Western Balkans that still does not have the right of free movement in the Schengen area.
