Albania and EU candidate countries hold conferences in Brussels today

For the first time in more than two decades, four countries are holding conferences in Brussels in an effort to advance towards European Union membership, Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos announced.

Ukraine’s path towards EU membership took a step forward on Tuesday after the European Union opened Cluster 6 of accession negotiations with the country, covering areas such as security and defence.

“In these areas, the arguments for Ukraine’s EU membership are particularly strong. With its military experience and innovation capacities, Ukraine is indispensable for Europe’s future security architecture,” she wrote on X.

The four leading countries in the accession process — Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, and Montenegro — are also taking significant steps forward.

“Albania will close its first chapters, while Montenegro is in the final stage of formal negotiations, having closed 18 out of 33 chapters,” the senior European official further noted.

She stressed that “today’s momentum must be transformed into concrete results on the ground.”
