The Chairman of the Board of the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO), Ymer Fejzullahu, has called for electricity savings. He stated that consumption during peak periods has reached 1,500 megawatts per hour, while Kosovo’s production is 900 megawatts. Fejzullahu emphasized that this difference must be imported and added that there are also problems regarding transmission and distribution capacities.
At a press conference following the ERO Board meeting, he said that during the winter period, a large number of consumers are doubling their electricity consumption, reports KosovaPress.
According to him, consumers in rural areas and households should find alternative heating solutions instead of relying on electricity.
“We call on electricity consumers to save energy, and these savings will be reflected in future electricity tariffs. We urge all consumers, especially electricity users, to save energy at least during December and January. Electricity should not be used for heating spaces, as in most cases it is unaffordable for our system. Peak consumption has reached over 1,500 megawatts, while maximum production is around 900 megawatts. This difference must be imported, and besides being forced to import this gap, we also face major problems with transmission and distribution capacities. During the winter season, many consumers double their electricity consumption,” he said.
He highlighted that peak consumption in Kosovo has approached the levels of Albania, which has twice as many residents and businesses as Kosovo.
“Peak consumption in Kosovo has approached the maximum peak in Albania, which is 1,600 megawatts, or 1.2 times that of North Macedonia. Although Albania has twice the population of Kosovo, we have come close to their electricity consumption during these days,” Fejzullahu concluded.
