“Electricity meter misuse”: Kosovo’s Energy Regulatory Office says every affected consumer will be compensated

Kosovo’s Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) has announced that it is continuously monitoring the situation regarding consumers’ concerns over possible deviations in tariff time periods in electricity billing.

According to ERO, in cooperation with relevant stakeholders, concrete actions will be taken to prevent any potential harm to consumers and to ensure a fair and transparent process of electricity measurement, KosovaPress reports.

The institution said it has acted in line with the applicable legislation in cases that have been reported, requesting the replacement of problematic meters and taking measures for financial corrections based on technical assessments.

ERO emphasizes that in most verified cases, electricity metering has been found to be accurate, while any discrepancies are mainly related to deviations in tariff timing. However, according to the authority, financial corrections in most cases have not been in favor of consumers.

ERO also recalls that KEDS and KESCO are regulated companies operating under the legal and regulatory framework, while their revenues are determined by ERO itself, limiting the possibility of benefiting from any eventual errors.

“Any possible error is temporary and any affected consumer will be fully compensated,” the statement reads, adding that failure to meet obligations by operators will be handled in accordance with the law.

ERO concludes by stressing its commitment to transparency, accountability, and fair handling of consumer complaints.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation (MINT) recently fined KEDS €30,000 after six electricity meters were found to have expired verification periods.

Earlier, the Democratic League of Kosovo conducted a study on electricity in Prishtina and Ferizaj, which claimed that “87% of electricity meters do not correspond to real time and the most expensive tariff period.
