Cases of counterfeiting money have been reported more frequently in recent days in Kosovo. The 100 euro banknotes and 2 euro coins are the most common ones So far, thousands of cases have been reported to the Kosovo Forensic Agency. The director of the tracheology department at the Kosovo Forensic Agency, Milazim Tahirukaj, told KosovaPress that in recent days they have received numerous reports of counterfeit money. "In recent days there have been reports that there are many counterfeit banknotes and coins. The Kosovo Agency for Forensics informs you that there is an increase in the number of cases, compared to previous years, in terms of this period," said Tahirukaj. He said the most counterfeit banknote is the one of 100 euros, while of the most counterfeit coin is 2 euros. "Based on statistics and comparisons between this period and the period of last year, this year is as the last year, the 100 euro banknote is the most counterfeit banknote, while in terms of coins, that are thousands of them, 2 euros coin is the most counterfeit one..So far, hundreds of cases have been reported, but in fact the amount or number of evidence is thousands of cases reported to the Kosovo Agency for Forensics ... According to the description of which is made by the police reports, the cases come from different countries, from different stores", he continued. He also added that they are making efforts to conduct a training, part of which will be all commercial banks. "It is true that in the Kosovo Agency for Forensics, we have cases or descriptions from the investigation that is also the Bank, i.e. that were found in the Bank, I do not want to point it out as a problem, in fact what was seized in the bank, that it was identified and then came here..We as an Agency are making continuous efforts with the Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) , to organize a training for all commercial banks, regarding the process of direct identification of counterfeit money. As for the equipment, it is up to the commercial banks to provide it", he said. According to him, there is an increase in the number of counterfeit banknotes compared to 2021. "Last year, of course, we had over 5000 counterfeit coins, while this year we have about 1000... Also the banknotes ... 100 euro banknote is as if it was in 2021, it’s the same case in 2022, but there is an increase in the number of banknotes, there are more than in 2021. The acse with counterfeit coins is the opposite at the moment", he said. Senior specialist for documents and manuscripts in the Kosovo Forensic Agency, Feriz Selimaj showed some specifics that can distinguish counterfeit coins and banknotes. "Each original banknote has security features ... 0:16 As a watermark, or a number with high pressure ... We have this 100 banknote, which has come to the division of documents and manuscripts for examination. First we do a visual inspection with the naked eye, we see if the value of the banknote matches the order, then we continue with the optical methods or the laboratory equipment that we possess ... In addition to expertise, we also make comparisons, because we possess samples. This is an original banknote or the standard sample, at the same time we make the comparison with the suspected banknote which has come to the division. The banknote above is the original sample, while the banknote below is suspected to be a counterfeit... The watermark is a very important feature which is integrated during the production of paper, because we have some features that are set during production, and some after production. In this case the watermark is a security feature which is placed during the production of the paper, so we identify or examine this security feature by means of the transmitting light, so in this case as seen above, under the influence of this transmitting light the watermark sign to the standard sample is clear, it can be seen that it is integrated, while on the banknote below which is suspected, there is none ... We also have numerous cases of coins coming to us. Here I have a 2 euro coin, which has come for expertise, we also identify these through this apparatus, so here we usually check the stamping of the stars, e.g. here we have 12 stars, six up, six down, we have the numerical value 2, we have the inscription euro, we have the maps of the countries, which as seen in the image are very poor quality, while in standard samples, you can see that the stamping, the stars are clear and the value of the number is clear," he said.
