About 100 primary school students dropped out of school last year. Although it is compulsory education, many girls and boys failed to complete even the elementary school. The highest number of dropouts was recorded in upper secondary education. Another 900 Kosovo students did not attend school during 2020-2021. Moreover, in this period Kosovo enrolled 12 thousand students less. This is most often happening due to poor economic conditions, where children are being forced to work, even though it is a violation of children's rights. In other cases, girls are forced to drop out of school, a large number being evidenced in the community. The ministry is being asked to work on the prevention of such cases, while the institution itself says that they have drafted policies for the prevention and return of students. The coordinator for human rights in the Ministry of Education, Merita Jonuzi shows that the numbers of school dropout cases have decreased, but in recent years there has also been a decrease in the birth rate.
