Today marks 18 years since the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo.

Kosovo’s Constitution was ratified on April 9, 2008, and entered into force on June 15, 2008. The Constitution is the highest legal act, guaranteeing the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens of the country, KosovaPress reports.

A large part of this Constitution derives from the plan of former president Martti Ahtisaari, thereby granting specific rights to minority groups and creating a safer environment for all citizens of Kosovo.

The Constitution defines Kosovo as a state with a neutral stance on religion – Article 8. It consists of 14 chapters and 162 articles.

April 9 is officially a state holiday in Kosovo, which means that institutions are closed today.
