The Kosovo Center for Peace is asking the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to repeal the administrative instruction that prohibits religious uniforms in schools.

This request came after the student's expulsion from the "Bedri Pejani" gymnasium, in Peja, due to wearing a headscarf.

The Basic Prosecutor's Office of Peja has opened a case and is analyzing whether there are elements of a criminal offense or not.

The executive director of the Kosovo Center for Peace, Labinot Maliqi, in a press conference in front of MESTI, said that this administrative instruction has created more confusion and damage to human rights.

He said that such instructions do not contribute to the empowerment of women.

According to him, the student, A.D. from Peja, has been banned from participating in the learning process at the "Bedri Pejani" gymnasium, without any official announcement.

The executive director of the Kosovo Center for Peace, Labinot Maliqi, said that since the entry into force of this administrative instruction, he has addressed 50 cases of girls who were banned from school because of wearing a headscarf.

The spokesperson of the Basic Prosecutor's Office in Peja, Shkodran Nikqi, said that regarding the expulsion of A.D from the school, they have already opened a case and if it is assessed that there are criminal elements, legal measures will be taken.

Since 2014, there has been an administrative instruction of the Ministry of Education, which prohibits the wearing of headscarves in schools; the same has even been opposed several times by the Islamic Community of Kosovo. /B.Ibishi/
