Without the candidates for president being made official, a session to elect the country's first president cannot be called, said the Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu.
With two days left until the presidential election, Haxhiu said that so far there is no candidate with thirty signatures of MPs, KosovaPress reports.
“The Presidency of the Assembly cannot act without candidates who have thirty signatures. It is required that there be two candidates, but three or four candidates are also allowed. As you know, the Assembly of Kosovo has 120 deputies and each candidate must have thirty signatures, but one deputy cannot provide a signature for two candidates, but only for one”, she said after the meeting of the Presidency of the Assembly.
She emphasized the need for cooperation between parliamentary parties to elect the president. Meanwhile, when asked about the PDK’s position that the presidential candidate should come from their ranks, she said that blocking positions are not welcome.“This is not the time for clashes or for unachievable demands that take the process away from its essence... The spirit of consensus and no single party can do it. Therefore, honest discussions with achievable demands are needed and not insurmountable barricades. As the Speaker of the Assembly, I welcome the meetings that have been initiated by the political parties. I also support any serious effort for constructive dialogue with the aim of finding a candidacy that unites... For me, blocking positions are not welcome. None of the political entities should tell someone that they are only my party candidate and provide me with signatures and votes in the Assembly. It is not right not to even know the name, but to say: provide me with signatures and votes in the Assembly of Kosovo”, she said.
In addition, Haxhiu said that so far in the LVV, which has the power and the parliamentary majority in the Assembly, no specific names have been mentioned that they could support for president.
"I am the Speaker of the Assembly. I thank the deputies for their support. It has not been mentioned and will not be mentioned," she said.
