Over 30 fake news are circulating in Kosovo during the day about the war in Ukraine
Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the whole world has been reporting on this situation. Media experts say that disinformation has its source in Russia and that this is happening for economic and political purposes. Fake news is circulating in Kosovo as well, even over 30 fake news are being identified within a day by cyber security experts.
Fake news is negatively affecting readers and their trust in the media is being lost.
Mentor Hoxhaj, cyber security expert in Kosovo, told KosovaPress, that all this propaganda has started from the media in Russia.
"It starts from 5 up to 20-30 news which are fake, if you calculate how much fake news is spread on one page, we have found a page is shared 14 times and reach an audience of over 2.5 million, which theoretically means that a reader sees the same news more than 2.5 times… Initially, the fake news was, and still is, from Russia, the newspapers "Russia Today" and "Sputink”, measures have been taken to reduce the possibility of disinformation to continue later with fake news which continue to have an impact in the Republic of Kosovo by pro-Russian and pro-Serbian media", he said.
The circulation of these fake news, according to him, is having a great impact on young people.
"They have had an extremely bad impact on the young ages, and also in the mature ages, where they have seen with concern, and they have expressed their concern in the comments or even directly to me, where they have asked taking harsh measures against portals which are spreading fake news. We have serious media which continue to post every photo, video from Ukraine... whereas non-serious media do it mainly for clicks and material benefits", said Hoxhaj for KosovaPress.
The professor of communication sciences at the University of Prishtina, Dren Gërguri claims that there is a large number of disinformation that have been spread these days. According to him, the distribution of this untrue news is done for two purposes.
"Disinformation happens for two reasons, one is the economic issue, whoever does it, makes it to gain financially, usually when the interest of citizens in Kosovo but also in other countries increases for a certain topic, precisely those who disinform for economic purposes turn the focus to that topic because they are aware that there will be more clicks and there will be benefits to them. Also, the second part, the second reason may be political, ideological that can be done by certain interest groups because they want to create a certain conviction and a perception of the issue in question, whether the war in Ukraine, whether the Russia's attack is right or not", he said.
Media expert and professor at UP, Remzije Shahini-Hoxhaj, who has become part of the communication network that was founded by many experts around the world, says that people get an impression of hope for life, but also information.
"A digital communication network that includes many experts from all over the world has started an initiative of which I am a part, to help Ukraine in one form or another. They have created a platform for users where people from Ukraine will be able to tell their stories about life in the days of war... We get first-hand information and people get an impression of hope for life, but at the same time they are informed", she said.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Media Commission, Faruk Rexhaj, says that based on the monitoring they are conducting, they are not able to identify who is behind those media.
"IMC monitors all electronic media, audio and audio-visual, and monitors portals. I think that maybe we have more fake news, on different portals whose owner or something similar is not known. Otherwise, in terms of audio and audio-visual media, we are extremely good at verifying the news, it is simply the IMC that has set the code of ethics, the various rules which the media generally respect", Rexhaj declares for KosovaPress.
