The employment remains the biggest concern of blind people. Despite the fact that a considerable number of them are well educated, they are still prejudiced. So says the president of the Kosovo Association of the Blind, Daut Tishuki, who adds that from the data they possess, only 50 blind persons are employed, out of 2,500 persons of this category throughout the country. Mentioning the difficulties they face in daily life, Tishuki also stressed the lack of assistive devices for the blind, as well as the conditions. Tishuki: There are only 50 blind people employed out of 2,500 “According to the data we have, there are only 50 blind people employed, out of 2,500 people in total. We have blind people who have completed higher education, and have scientific degrees, but employment is a very big challenge for blind persons. I would like to count the conditions that are present... there is prejudice, and the second is the lack of assistive devices, especially means of assistance for the blind, and this is our priority to constantly lobby for the vocal synthesis of the Albanian language. The Albanian language is not yet synthesized, which makes it impossible for the blind in Kosovo to use information technology”, he said. Tishuki, in an interview for KosovaPress, says that the employment of blind people remains one of the issues for which they are constantly raising their voice. Tishuki: The Kosovo Association of the Blind has over 1 thousand registered people "The Kosovo Association of the Blind has its activities according to the strategic plan in four areas, advocacy, lobbying to improve the lives of blind people, as well as advocacy about legislation, improving legislation, and the implementation of current legislation, education of blind persons, and the employment of blind persons. But also the main topic is that we provide specific services or social services for blind people that the state so far does not provide these services", said Tishuki. This year has been announced by the Government of Kosovo as the year of people with disabilities, and according to Tishuki, this could be a good start to solve some of the problems they have. Tishuki: The association is funded under projects "The association has partnerships with other associations for people with disabilities, we are in partnership, in the implementation of a project called 'Inclusive Kosovo', where within this, we have lobbied last year to the government and various ministries to declare this year as the year of people with disabilities, also together with certain ministries, we have drafted the calendar of activities for this year, which calendar was approved by the government and declared 2022 the year of people with disabilities, which means that if the calendar of activities is realized, the issue of people with disabilities will take a direction of solving problems", he said. The Association of the Blind of Kosovo extends throughout the territory of Kosovo through its 13 branches. In Kosovo there are 2,500 blind people, whereas, over 1 thousand blind people are members of this association.
