Apollo 8 departed from the US Kennedy Space Center on December 21, 1968, becoming the first astronaut spacecraft to leave Earth’s orbit, enter lunar orbit and return safely to Earth. The astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders became the first people to see the Earth from above as a whole planet, and the first to see directly the 'dark side' of the Moon.
