The European Court of Auditors (ECA) will hold a virtual conference on January 10th on its forthcoming special report on EU support for the rule of law in the Western Balkans. The conference will provide a detailed overview of the audit and put its conclusions and recommendations into context. In the Western Balkans, Slovenia (since 2004) and Croatia (since 2013) are now EU member states. Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Serbia are not members of the EU, but they all aspire to join. However, the enlargement procedure is taking much longer than any previous such negotiations. The Western Balkans receives funding from several sources, but the EU is the largest donor in the region. EU financial assistance is mainly channeled through the Instrument for Pre-Accession (IPA II). The rule of law is one of its nine priority sectors, according to a press release.
