Acting Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Svecla announced that he has signed the establishment of a working group that will analyze and propose modalities for the functioning of the Kosovo Gendarmerie as an agency within the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Svecla said the gendarmerie represents an important step in strengthening the security architecture, with a clear mission to ensure a strong state presence in protecting borders, territorial integrity and sovereignty, countering terrorism, managing high-risk public order situations, and protecting critical infrastructure.

He added that the Kosovo Gendarmerie will significantly strengthen state capacities for prevention, management, and neutralization of threats that endanger citizens’ security and the country’s territorial integrity.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti also said in a recent interview that, if he secures another mandate, the establishment of a Kosovo Gendarmerie within the police structure would be a priority.
