The Kosovo Customs has discovered over 30,000 euros in undeclared cash during a routine inspection at the Bërnjak Border Crossing Point.
In a press release, it is stated that customs officers, in cooperation with the Kosovo Police, stopped a vehicle with foreign license plates for a detailed inspection as it was leaving the territory of Kosovo.
During the initial interview, the persons in the vehicle declared that they were not carrying any goods or monetary funds that needed to be declared. However, after a search of the vehicle and personal belongings, the authorities found a significant amount of undeclared cash.In the passengers’ personal bag, 25,515 euros were found, as well as 565,060 Serbian dinars, which according to the exchange rate amount to around 4,813 euros, the statement says.
The total value of the undeclared funds amounts to 30,328 euros, exceeding the legal limit of 10,000 euros, above which declaration to customs authorities is mandatory. In accordance with the applicable legislation, Customs confiscated 25 percent of the total amount, while 75 percent of the funds have been temporarily withheld until the source and legality of the money are verified.The case has been forwarded to the competent investigation unit, which will undertake further legal actions.
Kosovo Customs has reiterated its commitment to enforcing customs and financial legislation, as well as combating illegal activities, including money laundering and terrorist financing.
