During the last year, Kosovo received 41 points in terms of the fight against corruption, and it is in the 83rd place in the world ranking.

This was said in the presentation of the report by the Kosova Democratic Institute (KDI), on the occasion of the publication of the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2023 by Transparency International (TI). It was emphasized there that compared to the countries of the Western Balkans, Kosovo ranks third after Montenegro, which is the country with the best performance, and North Macedonia, which is in 76th place. Meanwhile, it was said that Kosovo leaves behind Albania, which is in the 98th position, Serbia, which is in the 104th position, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is in the 108th position.

The researcher at the Kosova Democratic Institute (KDI), Eugen Cakolli, said that the position in which Kosovo is in 2023, as far as the fight against corruption is concerned, has improved compared to last year, which he says is the result of trends decline of other countries in the region.

Cakolli emphasized that the index annually ranks 180 countries and territories of the world based on the perceived level of corruption in the public sector. This index uses a scoring methodology, according to which zero indicates a very corrupt country, whereas 100 indicates a country free from this phenomenon.

Cakolli emphasized that compared to 2012, Kosovo this year has 7 points more than it had at that time, while it has 8 points more than the weakest position in which it was with 33 points in 2013, until 2015.

According to him, this ten-year improvement is considered to have come as a result of holding free and fair elections, but also of the fact that in Kosovo, unlike all other countries in the region, there was a peaceful transfer of power with the parties, which have lost the elections.

Among other things, the researcher at KDI, Eugen Cakolli, said that this report emphasizes the two main problems that Kosovo is facing in terms of performance in the fight against corruption and the obstruction that has been made to the work of the Assembly, namely the constitution of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on state reserves by the MPs of the parliamentary majority.

In addition to these, Cakolli said that it is necessary for the government to guarantee the independence, resources and necessary transparency of the justice system, so that all cases of corruption are punished and there is control and balance between the powers as the only form, according to him, to have an efficient fight against corruption. /Z.
