Gross hydropower production increases, coal production declines in Kosovo

Gross electricity production from hydropower plants in Kosovo increased in May this year compared to the same month in 2025.

According to the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS), gross electricity production from hydropower plants reached 49.22 GWh in May 2026, marking an increase of 51.38% compared to May 2025.

“Gross available electricity was 484.02 GWh, or 0.41% lower compared to the same month of the previous year, while electricity consumption was 398.66 GWh, or 8.88% higher compared to the same month of the previous year,” the statement said.

KAS also reported that alternative energy accounted for 22.20% of total electricity consumption. Electricity imports in May 2026 amounted to 422.31 GWh, while exports during the same period reached 205.27 GWh, including transmission volumes.

Meanwhile, coal production in May 2026 stood at around 301,303 tonnes, representing a decrease of 37.25% compared to the same month last year.
