Four years without Adem Demaçi
Today marks four years since, at the age of 82, the activist of the national issue, Adem Demaçi, known as the Mandela of Kosovo, passed away.
Coming from Lupq of Podujeva, Demaçi was born on February 26, 1936 in Pristina. He was active for the national cause during the period of Yugoslavia and fought for the equality of Kosovo with other republics.
For his political commitment, Adem Demaçi suffered 28 consecutive years in the prisons of Yugoslavia. After he was released, he immediately continued his political activity. He was also called the Nelson Mandela of Europe.
Adem Demaçi led the Council for Human Rights and Freedoms from 1990-1995. In 1991, he was awarded the Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament.
During the period 1998-1999, when the meetings were held in Rambouillet on the future of Kosovo, he was the political spokesman of the KLA. He was simultaneously the chairman of the League of Writers of Kosovo (2005-2007).
