Returning to full-time physical presence in schools is considered a right decision and has had a positive impact on teaching and learning. It is the students, teachers, parents and representatives of educational institutions who consider the return as a right decision.
Although the start of the 2021/2022 school year started almost a month late, actors involved in the education system say this year is much more successful than the previous school years, which due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching took place according to three different scenarios.
Students are the ones who say that this semester has been much more successful, as online learning has its difficulties.
Diamant Begolli, an eighth grade student at the “Emin Duraku” school in Prishtina, said that with their physical presence they manage to better understand the lessons.
"This year has been much better than previous years, because we were not online and we were not divided into groups. It has also been much better, we have understood the lessons much better, the teachers can explain more things and more details to us. It is much better than when the lessons were held online, we had a lot of problems with the network, with the systems", he says.
The other student of this school, Bulina Osmani, says that returning to school had an impact on having better results in learning.
"This semester of the eighth grade has been much easier than other years, because we are together and we are no longer online. It was harder online because some of us did not have internet, or we did not have the equipment to connect online. We find it easier to see the teacher explaining. [...] I had the best results when we came to school, because we saw the teacher explaining and we understood it better ", she says.
The teacher of mathematics at the school "Emin Duraku" in Pristina, Nuhi Dema, said that the return with physical presence and full time has had a positive impact for the students to have better results.
"During this school year we are trying to make up for those shortcomings that we have left over from previous years due to the pandemic. So we welcomed it in order to achieve the results. So this year we are trying to work on quality, while last year it was more quantity than quality, because we worked with different scenarios. [...] This year it is noticed that we have higher results in learning and teaching, because we have a full class of 45 minutes ", he says.
The president of the United Trade Union of Education, Science and Culture, Rrahman Jasharaj, also thinks that the semester was successful. However, he has criticisms regarding the investments that the state is making in education.
"Teachers have been able to perform all the obligations and students have been able to be much more active in class because they have been in the classroom with their teachers. [...] The teaching has been successful, it has been worked within the capabilities and the conditions we have, it has unfortunately been worked with chalks and sponges in some schools, the internet is missing. "[...] The state must give much more budget to improve, to prepare the school and the teacher in training for the 21st century. We are fighting a 21st century battle with the conditions of the last century", says Jasharaj.
Meanwhile, Jeton Demi, chairman of the Parents' Council of Prishtina, states that the return of the children to schools with fulltime has been positive, but says that we should wait to see if it will have an impact on their success.
"It is a short period to assess the overall impact on their success, but it is a positive period for so many months that we had time to be fully present. Because the expected new wave of virus return and increase in the number of cases may cause the need to reduce the presence of children in schools so as far as possible and this has been positive and we should be glad that in this period we were present. But it was to brief to assess that this may have had a positive impact, but it gives us hope, at least for this period", says Demi.
Rinor Qehaja, from the EdGuard Institute, also says that having physical presence teaching has a good impact on learning.
"We believe and it has already been proven in all school institution that the return has a positive impact on the learning process. Physical presence has proven to be irreplaceable with online and distance learning, so teacher-student interaction is essential in the process. "What we very much hope for is that this pandemic will be a good lesson for our institutions that needs a greater investment in digital learning", says Qehaja.
On the other hand, the Minister of Education, Arbërie Nagavci, emphasizes that it is too early to talk about whether there will be better results for students after returning to schools.
"It was not only a right decision but also a necessary one. In all reports of credible and international organizations it is mentioned and it is noted that distance learning has not achieved the necessary effects despite the situation with the pandemic was challenging and has provided opportunities in terms of improving some competencies and skills of the students but also of the teachers due to the organization of distance learning ", says Nagavci.
The school year 2021/2022 started on September 27 due to the pandemic situation. The first semester ended on December 30, while the second semester will start on January 10, a week from today.
