Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, stated that recent political developments and the atmosphere in Brussels indicate a more positive climate for Kosovo’s progress on the path toward European integration.
Using the metaphor that “spring is coming earlier this year,” he said that even the issue of the footnote could be “melted” sooner than previously anticipated, while emphasizing that despite the progress, the country still faces challenges that, according to him, are a legacy of previous governments, KosovaPress reports.
“It seems that spring is coming earlier this year, and as it was said back then that the footnote would melt like a snowflake, perhaps the year and the government were mistaken, but it is happening. Of course, we still have a bad legacy from that time, and we shouldn’t be overly enthusiastic. I emphasize again that the main obstacles, problems, and difficulties I faced during negotiations in Brussels come precisely from the backward legacy left by previous governments. We are working with all we know and can, with great zeal but also patience to eliminate them, and I believe the atmosphere in Brussels is positive for Kosovo to take steps forward. The two most important next steps are the European Commission questionnaire and the country’s candidate status. Currently, it is Cyprus’s presidency of the European Union, and from July 1, Ireland will begin its presidency. These days, we have the Irish ambassador, who covers Kosovo from Budapest, visiting our country,” he said.
