Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that starting today he will “send invitations to opposition party leaders to meet at the beginning of next week.” According to him, it is neither right nor useful to hold repeated elections. He also emphasized that it is necessary to reach an agreement with opposition parties for the election of the president.
Kurti made these remarks to the media when asked about the presidential issue, following his visit to the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (UCCK).
“I believe we need to meet with the opposition party leaders, and starting today I will send invitations for a meeting at the beginning of next week,” Kurti said.
He added that he is fully ready for consensus, but the likelihood depends on the others.
“The chances for consensus depend only on others because our willingness for consensus is complete,” he said.
Kurti also responded to a statement by President Vjosa Osmani regarding the scheduling of elections on December 28. He
“The last elections were held on December 28. In my strong opinion, it was not possible to hold elections on December 21 because the Central Election Commission Secretariat confirmed that organizing elections for that date was impossible due to necessary technical and logistical deadlines. Also, in October and November, we had two rounds of local elections, and we entered the early parliamentary elections process before certifying the local results. Therefore, no other date was possible besides December 28. Even January 4 would not have been feasible due to budgetary considerations,” he said.
He added that new elections are not needed “just to see if we can get 80 deputies.” It is necessary that the parliament becomes functional as soon as possible, without holding new elections.
“I don’t believe it is necessary to repeat ourselves. The President is the head of state, I am the Prime Minister, and I believe we have a matter now before the Constitutional Court. The focus should be on the fact that last year we had four rounds of elections, and I am convinced we should not repeat that in 2025. The year 2026 is a new year; it is neither right nor useful to have repeated elections. Therefore, it is necessary to reach an agreement with opposition parties for the election of the president. Citizens expect institutional stability from us, not repeated elections. So, there is no need for new repeated elections; we need the Constitutional Court’s final ruling as soon as possible and for the parliament to start functioning,” Kurti said.
The Constitutional Court has issued a temporary measure regarding President Vjosa Osmani’s decree to dissolve the Assembly. This temporary measure came into effect on March 9 and will remain in place until March 31.
