Kosovo Acting President Haxhiu says inclusion of girls and women in tech is linked to economic development

The inclusion of girls and women in technology is not only about equality, but also about economic development, the progress of society, and the future of our country. This was stated on Wednesday by the Acting President and Speaker of Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, at the “Future Makers: Girls in ICT” conference, an event that focused on the role of girls and women in technology and the digital transformation of society, as reported by KosovaPress.

The conference broadly discussed rapid technological developments, including artificial intelligence and its impact on the economy, education, and everyday life, also raising the fundamental question of who is shaping the digital future.

“We are a young country, with many young women and men who want to move forward. Our path has not been easy; we have built many things ourselves, through our own effort. But from this we have drawn strength, knowledge, and also confidence that we can rise every time we face challenges. Once, the wealth of nations was measured by land, mines, and factories. Of course, these are still very important, but today it is increasingly measured by knowledge, innovation, and the ability to create. This is our opportunity, but no country moves forward by leaving half of itself behind. Therefore, the inclusion of girls and women in technology is not only about equality, of course about equality, but not only about equality; it is about economic development, the progress of society, and the future of our country. Albanian women and girls have always found their path. Through work, knowledge, and resilience, they have supported families, built societies, and opened new paths even when it was almost impossible and very difficult. Even today, this spirit characterizes them,” Haxhiu said.

She also mentioned inspiring examples of Albanian women who have achieved success in major global technology companies, such as Mira Murati, as well as other professionals from Kosovo building international careers.

In closing, Haxhiu delivered a motivational message to the participating girls.

“The road ahead of you will not always be easy; you will meet people who will doubt you, who will judge you, and even those who will tell you that this field is not for you. There will be fatigue, uncertainty, and challenges, but these are temporary difficulties and do not define your abilities in any way. Do not wait for everything to be perfect before taking the first step, because the path often becomes clear only as we walk. Do not think that technology belongs to someone else; it needs your knowledge, your ideas, and your courage. If someone underestimates you, respond with work. If the road seems long, walk step by step. If you face difficulties, do not give up, because that is where your strength begins.”

Rector of AAB College, Blerim Olluri, in his speech emphasized the importance of empowering girls in technology, stressing that the conference represents more than a formal gathering.

“Girls should be taught to be brave, not perfect. Sandberg also reminds us: ‘What we need to do is ensure that women are not only part of the future of technology, but leaders of it.’ These two messages essentially invite us to rethink the role of girls and women in digital society and to act boldly to change it. It is precisely this spirit that has brought us here today. It is truly an honor and a pleasure to welcome you to this important conference, Future Makers: Girls in ICT. Today’s meeting is more than a conference; it is a statement of intent, reflecting a shared commitment to building a future where innovation is inclusive, where technology serves humanity, and where our girls are not only participants but leaders in the digital transformation of our societies,” Olluri said.

The “Future Makers: Girls in ICT” conference was described as an important step toward promoting gender equality in technology and empowering girls to actively participate and lead in the digital future.
