Activist Hoxha: We demand a commitment from the ERO that there will be no electricity price increase

Some activists from the “Not a Cent More” group protested today in front of the offices of the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) to oppose the 15% increase in electricity prices starting from April, KosovaPress reports.

Although the activists of “Not a Cent More” attempted to enter the premises of the ERO, they were blocked by a large number of police officers present at the location.

Activist Dibran Hoxha stated that they are seeking a commitment from the Chairman of the ERO Board, Ymer Fejzullahu, “that there will be no increase in electricity prices”.

Hoxha considered the heavy police presence as unreasonable.

“From the Ministry of Economy to the Government and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, they are acting through ERO to protect KEDS’s profit at the expense of the citizens. Today, 30-40 police officers came for no reason against 10-15 citizens protesting. On April 5th, there will be another protest, and future protests will be organized to prevent this price hike, as this is a heavy burden for every citizen. Our goal is not to carry out any act of aggression. I don’t know if they thought we were carrying out some terrorist act. We are exercising our democratic rights to come out and protest,” he said.

He also commented on statements made by the Minister of Economy and the ERO leadership.

Hoxha: “When it’s about protecting KEDS’s interests, they send 30 police officers, and the ERO CEO says, ‘Find cheaper electricity,’ while Minister Rizvanolli says the price must increase because we have some accounts to settle. This makes no sense at all. What is happening in our country?” he said.

Yesterday, during a symbolic action by the “Not a Cent More” group at the ERO offices to oppose the electricity price increase, 12 activists from the group were arrested. Their release by the police was later confirmed by KosovaPress.

The announcement of the electricity price increase has sparked strong reactions and dissatisfaction among citizens and businesses. The presidency has also opposed this price increase, but so far, the Government of Kosovo has not opposed it, except for requesting an increase in the number of blocks for consumers.

Due to these grievances, another protest has been announced for April 5th in Pristina, KosovaPress reports./B.Ibishi/
