Kurti responds to Kosnett on the issue of association
The chief executive, Albin Kurti, has stated that the demands for a one-ethnic association are not coming from ordinary people, but from politicians and northern neighbors. He reiterated that Kosovo can not have an association on ethnic grounds. Furthermore, he emphasized that this is well defined in the 2015 ruling of the Constitutional Court.
This is how Prime Minister Albin Kurti responded on Thursday morning, while commenting for KosovaPress on the statements of the American ambassador Philip Kosnet. The latter on Wednesday said that Kosovo has an obligation to establish an association of Serb-majority municipalities.
Kurti stated that Kosovo has an association of municipalities and it is functional.
"I do not think it is possible in the legal and constitutional order of Kosovo to have an association on ethnic grounds. There may be an association of municipalities on a developmental basis, there may be on a geographical basis. Take the association of the Rugova mountains, Sharr mountains or the Lepenc River for example. But an association on ethnic grounds can not pass either in terms of the spirit or the letter of the Constitution of Kosovo. And practically such a thing has been said by the ruling of the Constitutional Court published on December 23, 2015", said Kurti.
Kurti added that they are in favor of the rights of all minorities, and against marginalization or discrimination.
He further said that such requests are coming from politicians and northern neighbors.
"The request on ethnic association, which has been current for almost a decade now, does not seem to come from ordinary people. But from politicians and our northern neighbors", said Kurti.
US Ambassador Philip Kosnet on Wednesday said that Kosovo has an obligation to establish the Association of Serb-majority municipalities, and that states have an obligation to respect their agreements and commitments.
