Civil society in Kosovo and Serbia calls for the rule of law in Deçan to be respected
18 non-governmental organizations and activists from Kosovo and Serbia have issued a joint statement to the media demanding the implementation of the decision of the Constitutional Court on the ownership of the lands of the Deçan Monastery.
They say that all decisions of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo must be respected.
"We, the signatories, are concerned about the continuing negative consequences of the recent statement of the Mayor of Deçan, Bashkim Ramosaj, who has pledged that the decision of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo on the ownership of land in the Monastery of Deçan will never be implemented. All decisions of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo must be respected. The Constitution provides important guarantees for all citizens of Kosovo, but such guarantees only make sense if court decisions are implemented by natural and legal entities throughout Kosovo", reads the statement.
These organizations say that non-enforcement of legal judgments only leads to a sense of insecurity for all citizens of Kosovo and serves only as a detrimental to trust in the rule of law in Kosovo.
"We call on all those holding public official positions to refrain from making statements that only serve to undermine confidence in the rule of law", reads the statement.
The signatories of this statement are: Activ, Civic initiatives (Gradjanske initiative), Center for Peace and Tolerance, Democracy+ (D+), Forum for Development and Multiethnic Collaboration (FDMC), Gorazdevac Media Group, Jelena Lončar, Academic at the University of Belgrade, Kosovo Law Institute, New Social Initiative (NSI), NGO Be Active 16, Presheva, Media Center, Qagllavica, The Future, Bujanovc, Voice of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians (VoRAE), Vjollca Krasniqi, Academic at the University of Prishtina, YIHR Serbia, YIHR Kosovo, YUCOM and Valon Arifi, civic activist.
